　　15.the Beatles wrote their own words and music.

　　16.They had a close personal relationship with their audience,

　　17.and they expected them to join in and dance to the “beat” of the music.

　　18.Audience participation is an essential characteristic of pop culture.

　　19.Some pop groups, in particular the Rolling Stones,

　　20.did more than just entertainment.

　　21.They wrote words which were deliberately intended to shock.

　　22.They represented the anger

　　23.and bitterness of youth struggling for freedom against authority,

　　24.and for this reason they were regarded by some people

　　25.as the personification of the “permissive society”.

　　26.The Beatles, on the other hand,

　　27.finally won the affection — and admiration —

　　28.of people of all ages and social backgrounds.

　　29.As they developed, their songs became more serious.

　　30.They wrote not only of love,

　　31.but of death and old age and poverty and daily life.

　　32.They were respected by many intellectuals and by some serious musicians.

　　33.Largely thanks to the Beatles,

　　34.pop music has grown into an immense and profitable occupation.
