在初級英語階段，學生知道引導定語從句的關系代詞有who (whom, whose),that和which等。到了中高級階段尤其是在考研英語的復習階段，這些顯然是不夠的。還應了解but和than也可以用作關系代詞的情況，提高語言識別和理解能力，這對考生在考試時有著很重要的提示作用。

　　一、but

　　but在英語句子中可用作關系代詞，引導定語從句。但應特別注意but雖然形式上是肯定的，意義上卻是否定的。這正是but和其它關系代詞(who, that , which等)不同之處。例如：

　　(1)There is no rule in English but has exceptions.英語中沒有無例外的規則。

　　(2)There is no old habit but may be cured by a strong will-power.通過強大的意志力沒有改不了的舊習慣。

　　(3)With the introduction of the electronic computer, there is no complicated problem but can be solved in a few hours.由于引進了電子計算機，沒有在幾小時內解決不了的復雜問題。

　　(4)There is no human being but errs.沒有不犯錯誤的人。

　　如果將以上例句(1)、(2)和(3)中的關系代詞but改成that，或者將例句(4)中的關系代詞but改成that或who,那么定語從句必須改成否定從句才能與原句意義相一致。例如：

　　(5)There is no rule in English that has no exceptions/ that has not any exceptions.

　　(6)There is no old habit that may not be cured by a strong will-power.

　　(7)With the introduction of the electronic computer, there is no complicated problem that cannot be solved in a few hours.

　　(8)There is no human being that(who)makes no mistakes/that(who)does not makes any mistakes.

　　【注意】如果(5)、(6)、(7)、(8)中沒有明確的否定詞no或not any等，其意義則完全相反。

　　二、than

　　than也可以用作關系代詞，引導定語從句，但要注意主句中必須有比較級字樣和than前后呼應。例如：

　　(9)He smoked more (fewer) cigarettes than (he bought.) were normally available.他吸的香煙比他買的(弄到的)要多(少)。這里than在語法功能上相當于that/which的功能，但是這里不能改成后者，因為主句中有比較級more。

　　請再看下列的例句：

　　(10)We often advise him not to drink more wine than is good for his health. 我們經常勸他為了身體健康不要喝過量的酒。

　　(11)He often sat in a small bar drinking considerably more wine than was good for his health.他經常坐在小酒館里，喝過量的酒。這不利于他的身體健康。

　　(12)To understand the situation completely requires more thought than has been given thus far.要徹底理解這種局勢需要作比迄今為止更多的思考。

　　如果我們仔細觀察一下，就會發現，例句(9)中的名詞cigarettes用的是復數形式，所以從句就用了復數形式的動詞were,而在例句(10)、(11)和(12)中由于所用從句中便分別用了單數形式的動詞is、was以及has been given。由此可以證明，以上各例句中的than從語法功能來看是關系代詞，所引導的從句是定語從句，而不是連接詞引導的狀語從句。
